This includes technical textiles, which are used as innovative materials, e.g. in automotive technology and aeronautics, for buildings or protective clothing (fire brigade, police, bulletproof vests, military, BC protection ...), as well as smart textiles and wearables.

Therefore, take the opportunity and get to know Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, where currently about 14.000 students are studying in ten different departments at the locations in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld.

Textile and Clothing Technology

The study course Textile and Clothing Technology includes textile and clothing technology as two fields of study. After an identical basic study, students have the opportunity to determine their own specializations within these tracks.

The Bachelor's programme is organized in a practical manner and provides important basic knowledge and skills in the fields of natural sciences and economics within the first semesters. Graduates of this study course are able to control and monitor processes of the textile chain.

With a completed degree in Textile and Clothing Technology, exciting perspectives in numerous fields of activity in the textile and clothing industry open up for you.

The standard time to a degree is seven semesters.

Textile Technology

Studierende im Textil-Maschinenlabor

Students who opt for Textile Technology can choose between core study areas in Textile Management or Textile Technologies.

The core study area in Textile Management encompasses a broad spectrum of innovative topics from the entire field of textile technology and management sciences. In Clothing Technology fundamental knowledge and insights are delivered extending from design theory via thread, surface and finishing technologies to quality management and quality assessment of textile materials. Subjects from the field of management theory, such as organisation, marketing and human resources set the key accents in this programme.

Students in the core study area of Textile Technologies acquire a particular knowledge of the relevant technologies used in spinning, weaving, knitting, narrow fabrics, nonwovens and composite materials. Innovative materials are discussed in particular in the field of technical textiles. The complex requirements for the raw materials used as well as for the production processes and manufacturing technologies are part of this specialisation area. How the quality of the manufactured products can be tested and assessed is taught in the area of quality management.

Clothing Technology

clothing techn

Students who choose Clothing Technology as their field of study can specialise either in the core study area of Product Development or in Clothing Management.

The core study area in Clothing Management trains young engineers and professionals for the highly diverse and versatile range of technical and business administration tasks in the clothing industry. Students get to know about manufacturing and process technology in the areas of classical clothing, workwear and protective clothing as well as technical textiles. In addition, students are provided with the foundations of ergonomics and aspects of factory planning. Sustainability, quality management and ecology are also part of the study content (curriculum).

Studies in Product Development focus on teaching comprehensive knowledge and skills in all fields of the textile supply chain. Students learn how the planning, control and logistical handling of relevant processes in the clothing technology industry can be organized. Furthermore, they are familiarized with the core areas of style development such as clothing construction, pattern design and grading, so that graduates are able to implement models for specific target and product groups after their studies. Dual Studies

The dual study combines practice and theoretical knowledge in a unique way. In parallel to the undergraduate studies, the students are going through a training course in an industrial company, especially designed to complement the studies. In addition to financial independence, this ensures a high practical relevance. The mutual influence of practical contents from in-company training on the one hand and the theoretically and scientifically oriented study on the other hand allows for both an unmatched practical orientation and a broad, practicable basic knowledge. The dual study course is an ideal preparation for the demands on an engineer in the professional world. This combination of professional training and study is appreciated and respected worldwide.

Imparting the same study contents, the first two study semesters are completed part-time (two days a week) in parallel to the training in the company and are, therefore, distributed over a total of four semesters. The remaining study period is completed in full-time study.

The standard time to a degree is nine semesters.

Textile and Clothing Technology dual

Dual Studieren

In the dual study course, too, students can choose between two main fields of study: Textile Management and Textile Technologies or Clothing Technology and Product Development.

With its focus on textile management, the field textile technologies covers a subject spectrum ranging from the entire textile and finishing technology to quality management, quality assessment and management theories. Other subjects such as organization, marketing and human resources are also taught intensively. Following the Textile Technologies track, students can focus on the technologies of spinning, weaving, knitting, narrow textiles, finishing, and technical textiles.

In the field of clothing technology one of the specialization possibilities is clothing management. Here, engineers are prepared for the versatile technical and managerial tasks of the clothing industry as junior and senior managers. The focus of the study course lies on the areas of manufacturing techniques and production processes for the clothing production. In addition to this, in-depth courses are offered in economical and ergonomical sciences. Students following the other area of specialization, product development, acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in all areas of clothing construction, such as pattern making, stencilling, model construction and fitting control.

Courses start: Winter semester

Application procedure: No admission restrictions

Admission requirements:

  • General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or school-based and practical part of the advanced technical college certificate
  • 2-year training contract in the occupational areas of the textile or clothing industry

Language of instruction: German

Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Design Engineering

The degree programme leading to a Design Engineering degree encompasses the two core study areas of textiles and fashion. In particular, this degree programme aims to combine design and technology in equal parts. This combination provides the graduates with a broad basic knowledge, which is the ideal preparation for meeting the requirements of an innovative and global textile and clothing industry.

The term Design is defined as conscious shaping or arrangement. The engineering part of the study is constituted by training in the construction of industrially, technically manufactured products. In order for a product to successfully enter the market, a multidisciplinary knowledge is needed during the development process. Design engineers therefore combine construction and design competence.

In order to gain admission to this course a prior aptitude test must be passed.

The standard time to degree is seven semesters.

Textiles

di-textil

The core study area of Textiles constitutes the design of fabrics for clothing, fashion, interior textiles and technical textiles from the draft to the development of a market oriented collection.

In the module design analysis and Methodology, students learn to use the artistic and technical characteristics and functions of textile materials and patterns. Innovative methods of surface structuring, pattern design and material application are imparted, which can be realised in textile design and production technology. The module surface texturing, in turn, is subdivided into the courses of warp construction, jacquard technology and fabric construction. In addition, students gain important knowledge about textile materials and production processes in the field of fiber and yarn technology. The module finishing gives students the opportunity to acquire a basic knowledge of the processes and technologies in the area of textile finishing and specifically in the sub-areas of pre-treatment, coloring and coating. In the field of technical textiles, the prospective design engineers will learn about the requirements for technical textiles by means of selected examples from the areas of automotive interior and personal protective equipment as well as medical and hygienic products.

The goal is to be able to plan, design and develop a textile product at the end of the studies. Students can use the modern equipment available at the university as well as the various CAD systems, which enable practice-oriented studies.

Fashion

Entwurfsbuch für eine Kollektion

Studies in the field of fashion aim to qualify engineers who are able to create aesthetic and functional clothing, while also taking industry and market-specific requirements into consideration. A wide range of elective subjects such as CAD courses, fashion photography and fashion theory offer room for individual specialization. The close connection with the engineering degree in the field of clothing technology qualifies the students for pattern construction and manufacturing processes. Within this field of study the students acquire important knowledge in the area of industrial clothing construction. The intensive analysis of the shape and material properties of individual product groups provides a good basis for innovative ideas. Students learn to interpret model sketches and to transform them independently into basic and subsequent model construction. Furthermore, competencies are taught that enable students to do both develop their own collection independently and realise it technically according to industrial standards.

The special aim of this course is to combine design and technology in equal parts. The combination of design and technology optimally prepares students for the requirements of an innovative and global textile and clothing industry.
